QUICK ANSWERS

The questions we get most.

Won't it snap? Isn't silk floss weak?

Silk takes a little more technique than plastic, and that is the trade.

Real silk is not slippery Teflon, so if you snap it down hard or drag it across a rough filling it can fray.

Ease it through gently and it holds. The glide you give up is the plastic you are no longer dragging through your gums.

Does it actually clean as well as conventional floss?

Yes, and most people are surprised by it. Silk has a slight grip that lifts plaque and pulls food from between the teeth, so it cleans well without the synthetic slide.

Is it COMPLETELY plastic free?

Yes. Mulberry silk, coated in candelilla plant wax, with a light peppermint essential oil for flavour. That is the whole product. It comes in a glass jar with a metal lid, in a paper box. No plastic in the floss, the coating, or the packaging.

The problem with plastic floss

Twice a day, you drag plastic between your gums.

Almost all floss is nylon. A plastic thread you saw back and forth against your gums, twice a day, for life. It sheds the same nano-scale plastic your old toothbrush did, in one of the most absorbent parts of your body.

And the glide floss, the slippery kind people love? That slip is usually PTFE. Teflon. The same forever-chemical family (PFAS) that got pulled from cookware. A 2019 study found people who flossed with it had around 25% higher levels of a PFAS in their blood.

Silk is neither. No plastic to shed, no Teflon to absorb. A natural fibre that breaks down when you are done with it.

25 PERCENTHIGHER BLOOD LEVELS OF PFAS IN PEOPLE WHO FLOSSED WITH GLIDE FLOSS. BORONOW ET AL., 2019.
What it's made of

Three ingredients. None of them plastic.

01

Mulberry silk

A natural protein fibre, not nylon or polyester. Strong, fine, and fully biodegradable. The thread itself is the product, not plastic with a coating.

02

Candelilla plant wax

A plant wax for a smooth, clean glide. Not Teflon, not petroleum, not beeswax. Food-grade and safe.

03

Peppermint oil

Real peppermint essential oil for a clean finish. No synthetic flavour, no sweeteners.

Works well, feels nice , not as strong as your regular floss but worth it 👌

Love the silk dental floss, strong yet pliable, and best of all plastic free.

The floss is nice. Minty and works well. However it is a bit thick, so it hurts a bit to get inbetween my teeth.

K
Kylie M.

The slightly coarser texture of the floss actually works really well at removing debris between the teeth. Even the packaging is plastic free, which I really love.

Best of the silk flosses I've tried so far.

Floss is quite thick compared to normal floss so takes a few goes to get used to. It also breaks easily once wet so avoid flossing in the shower. I still prefer this over the plastic garbage and love supporting a small Aussie Business.

The silk floss is a really good a helpful product. You won't be disappointed. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to minimise plastic and toxins in their system.

Mint taste isn’t overpowering and only taste it a little bit now and again, which is good. If used in the same spot of the floss too much it will snap, so just adjust with each tooth and works great.

I love the non toxic floss. It is strong and tastes nice. No complaints from here and will definitely buy more.

Love the fact that it's plastic free, but it keeps on breaking while flossing. It needs to be stronger and thinner.

Love that this is a plastic free floss! Did well for between the incisors but unfortunately breaks when flossing between the tighter molars.

I love this silk floss. It definitely works better (at getting in between my teeth clean)than my usual supermarket floss. It feels more natural and does not affect my gums as much as the nylon one would

Isn't "plant-based" or compostable floss already plastic-free?+

No. The "plant-based" floss you will see is usually PLA, a plastic made from corn. It is still plastic. It only breaks down in a commercial composting facility, not your home bin, landfill, or the ocean. And plant-based plastic still sheds plastic: in lab testing, PLA products have shed several times more microplastic particles than conventional plastic ones. Real silk is a natural fibre, not a plastic of any kind.

Where do I get refills?+

We offer a box of 2x refills that you can use in the same glass jar. See refills →

What about tight teeth, braces, or hard-to-reach back teeth?+

Silk works for most people. If you have very tight contacts, a permanent wire, or a strong gag reflex, ease it in slowly. We are working on options for the trickier spots.
